Hello! And Welcome to
Your daily pinch of Spanish!
Today I will show you
how to construct a basic sentence in Spanish, using verbs in the present tense,
present participle, future tense, the past tense, and past participle.
The word for sentence
in Spanish is oración (oh-rah-see-ohn)
The word Oración also translates to 'prayer', by the
way!
Remember that all the
accent is doing is adding strength to the pronunciation of the syllable in
which it is present.
Now to the lesson! The
Spanish language is a Subject, Verb, Object (SVO) type of language, just like
English! So this is an advantage when you start learning Spanish if your native
language is English. The subject comes first, then the verb, and end in the
object.
In this little lesson
post I'll show you a basic sentence you can construct only by changing the verb
form. The examples will be with the verb 'Jugar' (to play). I will show you how
the verb changes depending on the subject, too.
(Remember, if you have
any doubt about Spanish pronunciation, you can go to the link above where I
have tables prepared to show you how to pronounce Spanish. You can click here, as well.) (**Update: This link will not be working while I rebuild my blog here, since I had to delete my old website. Thank you for being patient.)
In present tense:
El niño juega - The
boy plays
In past tense:
El niño jugó - The boy
played
In
present participle:
El
niño está jugando
In
past participle:
El
niño estaba jugando
In
the future tense:
El
niño jugará
If you want to add an
adjective, just put it at the end:
El
niño juega feliz - The boy plays happy
The same if you want
to add an adverb:
El niño juega
felizmente - The boy plays happiply
Depending on the
pronoun used in the sentence, the verb will change. Here's how the verb jugar changes:
Yo (I)
Juego - play
Jugué - played
Jugaré - will play
Estoy jugando - I'm
playing
Estaba jugando - I was
playing
Tú (you)

Estaba jugando - was
